Why read it

The talks that matter, before they’re fights.

Not a lecture and not a quiz: one person’s honest take on what couples should talk about, and why it’s easier to do it early.

  • Have the talk before the fight

Money, chores and family tend to come up mid-argument. Each chapter makes the case for talking them through early, while it’s still easy.

  • Written like a friend, not a textbook

Patrick isn’t a therapist and doesn’t pretend to be. It’s real stories, strong opinions and plenty of jokes, with the research cited where it helps.

  • A chapter for each big topic

From date nights and social media to moving in, money, religion and pets. Read it front to back, or jump to whatever’s coming up for you two.

  • Made to be used, not just read

It’s the companion to The Couples Contract: read up on a topic, then talk it through in the Contract and sign what you agree on.

About the author

Patrick Frank, founder of The Couples Company.

Patrick wrote contracts for a living, then made WhoIs?, the card game for couples, and played it with couples of every kind. Along the way he noticed that even couples who’d been together for years got simple questions about each other wrong. This book is what came of that.

He isn’t a counselor or a coach, and he says so up front. What he brings is honesty, a lot of jokes and the stories to go with them.

I guess if we were trying to give credentials, mine would fall more into the bucket of real-life experience.
Patrick Frank, from the preface

Who it’s for

Every kind of couple, at every stage.

Read it on your own, or out loud to each other. Skip what doesn’t fit your life.

  • Just getting serious

Before the habits set in: dates, phones, friends and how you each like your fun.

  • Moving in together

Chores, bills, the lease and the pets, talked through before the boxes are unpacked.

  • Engaged or married

Money, family, faith and the long run, while it’s still a conversation and not a negotiation.

  • Together for years

A nudge to revisit the things you settled long ago, and the ones you never did.

FAQ

Questions, answered.

What do I get?
The whole book as an ebook, in two formats: an EPUB, which fits itself to any screen, and a 210-page PDF laid out like a printed book. Both are yours to keep.
Which file should I use?
The EPUB for an e-reader, Apple Books, Google Play Books or the Kindle app (send it to your Kindle with Amazon’s Send to Kindle). The PDF for a computer or a tablet, or if you’d like to print a chapter.
Is there a paperback?
Not yet. For now it’s an ebook, so you can start reading the minute you check out.
Is it for adults?
Yes. Patrick writes the way he talks, so there’s strong language throughout, and Chapter 18, the Intimacy Appendix, is for adults only.
Is this advice from a therapist?
No. Patrick isn’t a counselor or a coach, and he says so on the first page. It’s his experience and opinions, with research cited where it helps. If anything in your relationship feels unsafe, please talk to a professional or someone you trust.
Is the contract in the book legally binding?
No, and that’s the point. The Couples Contract, in the book and in our app, is a conversation you write down together, not a court document. Nobody’s getting sued over the dishes.
How is it different from The Couples Contract and the Workbook?
The book is the why: Patrick’s take on each big topic and why it’s worth talking about early. The Couples Contract is the doing: an app where the two of you answer, settle each topic and sign. The Workbook is the warm-up: printable questions for two. Read the book, then do the Contract.
What’s in the free sample?
The preface and the first two chapters, about 9,000 words on 37 pages, as a PDF. Enter your email and the download appears right away, and we email you the link too.
How do I get it after I buy?
Your download links appear on your order page as soon as you’ve paid, and they come by email too. They keep working, so you can download the book again later on any device. Lost the email? We’ll send your links again.
What if it isn’t for me?
Email us within 30 days for a full refund. No forms, no fuss.
